The Greater Cedar Rapids Housing & Building Association has a new initiative called TINY PROJECT 2017. TINY stands for Trades Investing Nurturing Youth. Partnering with Kirkwood Community College, a group of high school students has renovated an 8-by-40-foot shipping container into a tiny home. The high school students, from all over Linn County, came to Kirkwood's Regional Center in Hiawatha each school day to learn about Architecture, Construction and Engineering (ACE). This partnership is intended to encourage high school students to pursue a career in construction. The students received 12 free Kirkwood college credits as they learned about plumbing, electrical, HVAC, finishes, cabinets, windows/doors, flooring, thermal/moisture protection and framing. The TINY PROJECT was made possible by the generous support of a number of sponsors from the building trades. Come tour the TINY PROJECT on the Parade of Homes and support these area high school student as they further their education in the building trades.
